Mariner Tournament
ten place in top 3 in A Brackets |
Travelling north to Mariner High School the Jag Wrestlers competed in their first tournament of the year. This tournament was unique as the first round determined if you went to the A or B bracket, depending on whether you won your first match. In the first round fourteen Jags won their first match moving in to the A bracket while 5 lost into the B bracket. The second round was not so kind to us as only four wrestlers moved into the semi-finals of the A brackets. From there, the Jags lost only seven matches in the A brackets against 17 wins.
There were many full teams competing and the tournament went late into the night. The tournament officials decided to award co-thirds due to time constraints. Phillip Baum (103) became our first sophomore to win a varsity tournament as he won by major decision in the finals. Brant Ernst (119) and Jason Boyd (140) placed second in their weight classes, and both almost won their weight. Ernst's opponent earned an escape in the last few seconds and Boyd lost in overtime. Seven other Jags came back to place third. In the B Brackets, Brian Nieblas won his next three matches to win the 125 B bracket, while Todd Folk placed second at 130 and AJ Henson 3rd at 140.
Overall the Jaguars won 49 matches against 28 losses. A good start for the first tournament of the season.
