Week 1

James Boyce - 135 pound sophomore stepped into the varsity lineup for the Jamboree, winning his first high school match by a major decision. He lost his second match, but battled back from an early deficit to save us team points during the match. Boyce is a hard worker in the practice room and constantly encourages others to work harder. |
Week 2
|
Sean Forbes - 125 pound junior had a good week on the mat as he defeated a state competitor from last season in our dual against Decatur, then placed second at the Wilfong Invitational Wrestling Tournament. |
Week 3
|
Trey Hamrick - Pinned his Puyallup HS opponent in the first round during our dual meet. Won the Cardinal Classic Tournament, coming all the way from the pigtail match to win it. Following his pigtail match, Hamrick went on to beat the number one seed (2001 state competitor) in an overtime match. Hamrick tied the match in the final seconds of regulation to go into overtime, then scored the takedown for the win. From there the rest was easy as he won his next two matches, and the championship match by a fall, to win the 145 pound title. Hamrick has emerged as a leader in the practice room this year. |
Week 4
|
Tomas Armenta - During the JV Tournament, Armenta won all four matches - three by fall - helping the Jags claim the championship. Armenta also wrestled varsity against Jackson and Stanwood, winning his match against Jackson 7-6. |
Week 5
|
James Castleton - Castleton won all of his matches this week to raise his record to 13-2. James has been elected one of our captains for the second year and becomes our first two-time Wrestler of the Week (won award in week 3 last season). |
Week 6
|
Kendall Eisenbacher - Our second two-time winner, senior heavyweight Eisenbacher pinned all five of his opponents this week, breaking our team record with 14 at this point in the season. Kendall beat a state competitor on his way to the championship of the Jaguar Invitational. Team Captain for 2001-02. |
Week 7
|
Daniel Smith- The junior 140 pounder avenged an earlier loss with a takedown in the final seconds during an exciting dual meet match on Friday. Smith then went on to capture his first high school tournament title at the Tahoma Mat Classic, winning the championship match in double overtime. It was Smith's fifth overtime match this season as he scored a takedown in the final seconds to tie up the score, then scored a reversal in the second overtime period for the win. |
Week 8
|
Jason Nieblas - The senior 140 pounder is the utility man of our team and will wrestle at any time in any situation. Jason wrestled 145 varsity against Spanaway Lake and ran his league varsity record to 3-0. He placed second at the JV Qualifier at 140 to advance to the League Tournament. |
Week 9
|
Cody Meek - Meek placed third at the SPSL League Tournament at 171 pounds, advancing to the Regional Tournament. Meek has emerged as a very competitive wrestler this season after being eliminated on the first day of league last season. His league dual record going into the tournament was 7-1. Against league opponents this season he finished 12-2. Meek was elected as a team captain earlier this season. |
Week 10
|
Robert Meray - Meray lost his second round match in the Regional Tournament, then went on to win his next three matches to advance to the State Tournament at 152 pounds. He finished fourth in the Region and will compete in the Tacoma Dome next week. Robert joined the 20-win club during the tournament, despite missing matches early in the season. Meray is a two-time W.O.W. winner, having won the award last February at the league tournament. |
Week 11
|
Mark Bentley - Mark became our first wrestling state placer and joins Katie Owens (5th in Tennis, 2001) as one of two state placers at Emerald Ridge High School. Mark won four matches and lost only two on his way to a fifth place finish. His two losses came to the eventual 2nd and 4th place finishers. Mark finished his Jag Wrestling career with a win in the fifth place match. Bentley is a two-time winner of the Wrestler of the Week award (week 5, 2001 season). |
