What a weekend! Jag wrestlers had a great regional tournament qualifying five for the state tournament with another as an alternate. Six of the seven wrestlers who competed placed in the top 5. In the team race, we finished fourth behind two state title favorites, Decatur and Heritage, and last year's state champs, Spanaway Lake. We won 22 matches and lost only 11 during the tournament. Mark Bentley and Kendall Eisenbacher became our first regional finalists, both placing second. Sean Forbes lost his semi-final to the eventual champion and won his next two matches to place third. Robert Meray and James Castleton both placed fourth to qualify for state. Cody Meek is an alternate finishing in fifth place. On to the Dome...

State Tournament @ the Tacoma Dome

Mark Bentley becomes the first wrestling state placer for Emerald Ridge, and only the second state placer in school history. Mark placed fifth at 135 pounds, winning four matches and losing only two. Bentley won his first match at state, then fell to the eventual runner-up in the second round. In the third match of the day, Bentley defeated Jon Bauer of Rogers with a takedown in the final round to become our first placer. On day two, Bentley won his first match to place in the top six, then lost to the eventual 4th place finisher. Bentley completed a great wrestling career by winning his final match to take 5th place.
Other Jags wrestled well, with 4 of the five wrestlers winning at least one match. As a team, we scored 14 points and finished in the top half of the 4A state tournament, and as the number 3 SPSL team. Sean Forbes (125), Robert Meray (152) and Kendall Eisenbacher (275) each placed ninth by winning a match. James Castleton (130) lost to the eventual champion in the first round and the seventh place finisher in the second round. |
